SEWARD WRESTLING CLUB NEWS

Coaching Q & A: We are very excited to be starting the 2012-wrestling season! The Head Coach this year will be John Hayek. At the beginning of every season there are always many questions, so we hope this newsletter will answer most of them for you. A parent meeting/Q & A session has been scheduled for January 10th at 7 pm (between sessions) to answer any remaining questions you may have.

Practices: Practices will be held in the wrestling room on Tuesday and Thursday evenings when available. The January calendar is available; the February and March calendars will be handed out at practice when the time comes. Kindergarten – 2nd grade will practice from 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. and 3rd – 8th grade from 7:15 – 8:30 p.m. Please note these times may be adjusted depending on the size of participation. If school should be dismissed early or there is no school due to the weather, we will NOT have practice.

Rules for your safety: In order for us to be allowed to hold club wrestling in the building after school hours, there are some important rules that everyone will be expected to follow for the safety and liability of all concerned. No street shoes will be allowed on the mat, parents included. The K-2 group may change shoes in the hallway right outside the wrestling room. The 3-8 group should also change shoes in the area outside the wrestling room and remain there until the younger group is finished.

All wrestlers must have a parent or adult to supervise them during the entire practice time. Members of the club feel this is necessary and very important for the learning and safety of all wrestlers present.

There are just too many kids to expect your coach and club volunteers to supervise the children when they are not wrestling. Wrestlers must stay in the wrestling room – we are not allowed in any other area of the building!

Insurance: Included with your $40 registration fee is insurance coverage. This is a supplementary insurance program that most of the tournaments this year will require. Basically it provides liability coverage and secondary medical coverage in the case of an accident at practice or a tournament.

Singlet Care: We are asking for your help in taking the best possible care of your singlet. They need to be washed in cold water inside out and NEVER put in the dryer. We reserve the right to keep your deposit for singlets that are returned damaged. A “How to care for your singlet” form was distributed at registration.

Shirt Sales: T-shirt orders should arrive by the end of January or early February and will be handed out at practice.

Shoe loan/sale: A list will be started with used wrestling shoes for sale. We also have some shoes that have been donated for loaning out. If anyone has old shoes that your wrestler has outgrown, there might be someone out there that would like to take them off your hands. If you didn’t see this list on sign-up night, let us know. High School Coach Core has requested that wrestling shoes or shoes that do not get worn outside, be worn for practices. By doing so, we can help extend the life of the wrestling mats.

Check out these websites for more information on reasonably priced shoes and headgear: wrestlingone.com, sunflowerwrestling.com or e-bay.com

Website: Our website has proven to be a very valuable tool for communication with you. The address is www.sewardwrestling.org. You will be able to find the latest club news, practice calendar; entry forms for tournaments and if an e-mail address is available you will be on the mailing list to receive e-mail announcements as they become necessary. Check it out!

Tournaments: Tournament participation, as always, is totally up to each individual family. We will be copying the tournament sheets for tournaments where a coach is present. These sheets will be made available to you during practices and they will also be on our website. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the wrestling room for each tournament a Seward coach will be present at. If you are going to a tournament, please check your name, this will help coaches and other parents know which kids have entered and plan to attend each tournament. We do request that your child wear a Seward Wrestling Club singlet for all Seward Wrestling Club sponsored tournaments. It is your responsibility to send in your own registrations. There are many tournaments each weekend and if you want more information about tournaments other than the ones Seward coaches attend, you can go to huskerland.org for a complete listing of all tournaments around the state.

***Seward Wrestling Club will be paying the entry fee for the All American Classic Seward tournament. We will be distributing the tournament sheet at practices. All completed entries should be turned during a practice to be submitted at one time. We are requiring if your wrestler signs up and does not attend this tournament, the parent be responsible for repayment of the tournament fee back to the club.

Our tournament is scheduled for Sunday, March 4th in the H.S. gym. This is also the NE USA District Qualifying tournament. Of course much of the success can be attributed to great parent help! We really need everyone to volunteer in some capacity, donating items for the concession stand, assisting with set up, clean up, bracketing or working a table. We need you and we will train you if necessary! Keep in mind this tournament funds everything the club does and eliminates the need for fund raising by your wrestler and your family.

End of year banquet: At times we like to wrap up the year with a fun activity. In the past we have held pizza parties or potluck meals with awards and fun for the wrestlers and their families. It has been a great way to end the year and the kids really look forward to it!

If you have any questions at all about anything, please let us know. For the last several years, this club has been run by a wonderful group of volunteers. If you are interested in helping out in any way, we would be very grateful.

Meet our board members:

Tom Logan – President John Hayek – Vice Pres Cindy Wiesen – Secr/Treas

Jim Patton – Jeff Reimers - Darek Vandenberg - Jay Wolverton Board Members
